How AI Is Changing the Impact of Deepfakes

A Real-World Deepfake Scenario 

Consider a scenario where an assistant receives a call from what appears to be their CFO. The voice is familiar, the request is urgent, and the context makes sense. 

In reality, the call is being generated using AI trained on publicly available audio of that executive. The attacker is not guessing, they are replicating. 

From there, the attacker can begin gathering sensitive information or initiating actions that appear legitimate. 

Deepfakes + Stolen Data = Full Identity Compromise 

Deepfakes become even more dangerous when combined with data from past breaches. 

Attackers often have access to: 

  • Previous addresses 
  • Dates of birth 
  • Partial Social Security numbers 
  • Employment details 

This information can be used to answer security questions, validate identity, and reinforce the credibility of the impersonation. 

When voice cloning and real personal data are combined, attackers can convincingly pass identity checks and gain access without ever triggering traditional alarms. 

The Help Desk Is a Critical Vulnerability 

One of the most effective uses of deepfakes is targeting internal support teams. 

An attacker impersonating an executive can call the help desk and request: 

  • A password reset 
  • Access changes 
  • Account recovery 

If the request is approved, the attacker is no longer outside the system, they are inside as a legitimate user. 

At that point, there is no phishing email, no malware download, and no brute force attack. Access is simply granted. 

What Happens After Access Is Gained 

Once inside, attackers can operate as the impersonated user and expand their reach. 

This often includes: 

  • Sending phishing emails from a trusted internal account 
  • Creating inbox rules to hide warnings or responses 
  • Accessing sensitive data and systems 
  • Moving laterally across the environment 

Because the activity appears legitimate, it can go undetected longer than traditional attacks.

Deepfakes represent a shift from technical attacks to identity-based attacks. 

Traditional defenses are built to detect: 

  • Malware 
  • Suspicious links 
  • Unauthorized access attempts

To address the rise of deepfake-driven attacks, organizations should focus on: 

  • Strengthening identity verification beyond knowledge-based questions 
  • Implementing multi-step validation for high-risk requests 
  • Establishing internal verification methods, such as a security phrase or question that only your organization knows, to confirm sensitive requests 
  • Applying consistent security controls across all users, including executives 
  • Training employees to question urgent or unusual requests, even from leadership 
  • Securing help desk workflows with stricter authentication processes 

Deepfakes are changing the nature of cyber-attacks.
