More companies are giving employees access to Claude, but fewer have a clear sense of when to use which model. That gap shows up in two ways: teams either default to the most powerful (and expensive) option for every task, or they stick with a fast, lightweight model that struggles once the work gets complex.
Anthropic’s Claude lineup is built around a simple idea. Different tasks call for different amounts of reasoning, speed, and context. Matching the model to the task keeps output quality high and usage costs predictable, which matters as AI tools move from experimentation into daily operations.
| Claude Model | Best For | When You Should Use it | Example Tasks | Pricing (per million tokens, input / output) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 4.5 | Fast, Simple Tasks | When you need a quick answer and don't need deep analysis | Summarize a meeting, draft a quick email, extract key points from a document, brainstorm ideas | $1 / $5 |
| Sonnet 5 | Everyday work (recommended default) | Use for most business, writing, analysis, and productivity tasks | Create reports, analyze spreadsheets, write proposals, research topics, create training materials, generate formulas | $2 / $10 (introductory, through August 31, 2026); $3 / $15 standard pricing after |
| Opus 4.8 | Deep reasoning and complex work | When the task requires extensive thinking, analysis, or problem solving | Strategic planning, complex data analysis, detailed research, policy reviews, difficult troubleshooting | $5 / $25 |
| Fable 5 | Large, long-running projects | For the biggest and most important projects that require multiple steps and extensive context | Large business plans, comprehensive research projects, multi-document analysis, long-term project work | $10 / $50 |
Pricing above reflects Anthropic’s published API rates, which apply when a business is building its own tools or workflows on top of Claude. Teams using Claude through the standard Claude.ai Pro, Team, or Enterprise plans access these same models under a flat monthly seat price rather than per-token billing. Either way, the model you choose is what drives the underlying cost, so the logic is the same.
| If You Need To... | Use This Model |
|---|---|
| Get a quick answer | Haiku |
| Complete everyday work | Sonnet |
| Solve a difficult problem | Opus |
| Manage a large, complex project | Fable |
Start with Sonnet for almost everything
Sonnet offers the strongest balance of speed, quality, reasoning, writing, and document creation for most business users. Reserve Haiku for tasks where speed matters more than depth, and move up to Opus or Fable only when the work is genuinely complex or spans a large amount of material.

A Few Other Details Worth Knowing
Context window size, or how much information a model can hold in a single conversation, also varies by tier. Haiku 4.5 supports a 200,000-token context window. Sonnet 5, Opus 4.8, and Fable 5 all support up to 1 million tokens, which matters for teams working with long documents, large spreadsheets, or multi-file research projects.
Fable 5 sits at the top of Anthropic’s lineup and includes additional safety review for sensitive requests, so it may occasionally decline a task that a lower tier would complete without issue. For most day-to-day business use, that trade-off rarely comes into play.
Pricing and available models are subject to change as Anthropic updates its lineup, so it’s worth checking current rates before budgeting for a larger rollout.
Choosing the right model isn’t about finding the “best” one. It’s about matching the tool to the task, the same way a business would assign the right person or process to a project based on its complexity. Getting that match right is often the difference between an AI rollout that saves time and one that quietly runs up costs.
